The Eccentric vibrating mills type ESM impress with their high performance and reliability in a wide range of applications and feed materials in the field of mechano-chemical activation and ultrafine grinding.
How does an Eccentric vibrating mills work?
Only the single-tube eccentric vibrating mill from SIEBTECHNIK TEMA performs inhomogeneous movements consisting of elliptical, circular and linear vibrations due to an outwardly positioned unbalance drive. The result is a high degree of loosening of the mill filling with very high impact stresses on the material to be ground, especially at high amplitudes. The high specific energy input with a high degree of loosening of the mill filling is a decisive advantage of the single-tube principle, which, due to its design, also enables a significant reduction in the mill mass and thus the drive energy. The eccentrically arranged unbalance excitation generates inhomogeneous vibrations, whereby the main wear zone in the Eccentric vibrating mills is distributed more evenly over half of the lower plating.
Advantages
The modular design of the machine offers enormous advantages, especially for larger machines:
- The grinder can be divided into small units for transportation and installation
- The drive train, which is completely attached to the outside of the mill body, is freely accessible after removing the guards
- All drive components and in particular the compact exciter units can be easily replaced during maintenance, which significantly reduces downtimes compared to circular vibratory mills
- The grinding tube modules also make it much easier to change the grinding media and wear protection lining
- The grinding tube modules allow the grinding tube length to be adapted to individual tasks or to changing tasks during operation
Structure & function of the ESM
Our Eccentric vibrating mills have a modular design and essentially consist of
- the cylindrical grinding tube
- Coil springs
- the base frame
- the grinding media filling
- the imbalance exciter
- of the leveling compound
Thanks to different discharge systems, the ESM can be used with the operating modes
- Continuous throughput operation
- Record-by-record batch operation
- Automated batch operation
be equipped.
The mill is set into inhomogeneous vibrations via the three-phase direct drive and the exciter units, which lead to the high energy utilization already mentioned. The mill is filled with ground material via a pipe socket at the highest point of the grinding container and discharged at the lowest point at the other end of the grinding container. A perforated plate in the outlet prevents the grinding media from passing through.
Design variants
SIEBTECHNIK designs and manufactures Eccentric vibrating mills specially tailored to the respective application. Available options include

During mechano-chemical activation, highly reactive states are generated that arise when crystalline systems are subjected to impact stress. In general, brittle materials have a crystalline structure that represents the lowest-energy state before Crushing & Milling. When subjected to mechanical stress through impact, this crystalline structure is partially destroyed and the energy input is stored.
This results in highly reactive states which, for example
- to increase responsiveness,
- to improve solubility,
- the magnetic properties,
- the conductivity
- and other physical properties.
Reactions between different crystalline systems are a special feature, whereby new substances with specific properties are created through solid-state reactions. Under these circumstances, the Eccentric vibrating mills take on the role of a mechano-chemical reactor.
Ultra-fine grinding in the Eccentric vibrating mills also follows specific laws. Depending on the product and grinding time, finenesses of 0 – 5 µm can be achieved and fibrous materials can be broken down.
Fiber destruction of asbestos
As an alternative to thermal asbestos destruction, the eccentric vibrating mill is used for fiber-free ultra-fine grinding of asbestos waste. During the ultrafine grinding of asbestos with the eccentric Vibrating mill, the impact stress and the associated high point temperatures achieve a complete destruction of the fiber structure through energy dissipation, so that needle-shaped, fibrous crystal structures are no longer detectable. The result is a fiber-free raw material.
Hard metals
Due to the high impact forces, the eccentric Vibrating mill can also be used for Crushing & Milling carbide scrap. For example, carbide drills or carbide cutting edges can be finely shredded.
Grinding tests in the SIEBTECHNIK TEMA technical center
For product tests and grinding trials, the screening technology technical center is equipped with test machines of various designs and the associated technical equipment for designing the mill sizes for the respective task.
All pilot plant machines can also be made available as rental machines so that specific grinding problems can be tested on site over a longer period of time.
